7 things you should do to stay sane whilst social distancing

With the novel coronavirus’s (or COVID-19) impact on society and the new social isolation regulations put in place by the Australian government, life as we know it has changed (at least for the time being).

Yes, this social distancing sucks, but it needs to be done in order to combat COVID-19. And whilst some of us are revelling in the fact that our social plans are cancelled (introverts rejoice!) and we have to stay home, we also need to think about the effect it’ll have on our health mentally and physically.

If we are self-isolating or just playing it safe, staying at home can lead to laziness especially if it’s for long periods of time, and inactivity can lead to risks to your health. Not to mention it can get boring doing nothing!

Here are a few suggestions to get you staying both physically and mentally well, as well as keeping you occupied during those periods of alone time we’ll all be facing.

Exercise: Keep your physical activity creating a routine. YouTube has some great channels to keep you motivated and moving whether its yoga or a quick cardio work out. Just because you can’t or don’t want to go to the gym doesn’t mean you should stop moving.

Grab a book and get lost in the pages.

Read: There has never been a greater time to pick up a book and get comfortable with a cup of coffee or glass of wine in hand and let your mind slip away and get lost in the pages of a good book.

Meditate: This is a great way to get rid of anxiety and focus on your mental health. Meditation apps like Calm give you a range of different meditation practices and you can pick how long you want to meditate for.

Take up a craft – who knows it could unlock a new passion.

Arts and Crafts: Take up a craft you’ve always wanted to do but never had time to.

Learn a language: Learning to speak another language is not only great for travel (and you will travel again), but can also be handy for employment purposes. Apps like duolingo are a good starting point to get the basics and then you can advance if you want.

Take an online course up skill or learn something completely new.

Take an online course: Improve your skills or learn something new. Keep your brain active and exercised. There are plenty of online courses available for almost anything you could possibly think of studying. Future Learn offers some free courses as well as a great range of affordable short courses as does Udemy. Up skilling is a great motivator and will not only keep you busy, but also assist in future employment prospects.

In New South Wales, the TAFE institute has launched free online courses including areas in business, leadership and administration. These courses provide you with certificates of attainment and potential credits towards other courses you may decide to study later on. Check with your state education department to see what they are offering.

Most importantly…

Keep in touch: Stay in touch with friends and loved ones via video calling. The internet is a great tool! Yes, you shouldn’t mingle with people too much if at all during this time but you can still video call them not just text. Keeping your social connections is really important in helping us all get through this global pandemic.

These are trying times but you can make the most of it by keeping to a fitness routine, interacting with others via Skype, messenger or other video calling apps and putting the spare time you now have towards things you’ve wanted to do and can do from the comfort of your home.
